Law enforcement agencies on heightened alert over ISIS Fourth of July threats; citizens warned to be vigilant

With the Fourth of July weekend looming, US law enforcement officials are beefing up security and keeping their eyes open for terrorist threats coming from ISIS.

Last Friday, America's Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center recently issued a joint intelligence bulletin that warns of several possible threats during the Independence Day celebrations. The bulletin mentioned the possibility that extremists might launch attacks during the weekend or during Pope Francis' visit. It also advised officials that there is a big possibility that any "activity which appears to defame the prophet Mohammed" will likely receive threats warning organizers that they will respond violently.

To that end, FBI command centers have been established across the country and all federal agents have been placed on heightened alert. The Bureau has also been working hard to smoke out and arrest known ISIS supporters and sympathizers before the big weekend. There are concerns that some terror attacks might be focused on soft targets with large crowds, like the mall or a park.

An official in the Homeland Security Department revealed that protection of federal buildings have been bolstered, with some locations being given extra security.

The terrorist group has allegedly promised its followers that those who conduct a terror attack during Ramadan will reach paradise and receive their "rewards in heaven."

Aside from putting the military and law enforcement agencies on high alert, the US government is also warning citizens to "remain vigilant" and be mindful of terror attacks. Citizens should be extra careful especially now that the threat of ISIS is not just limited to the Middle East.

Mike McCaul, House Committee on Homeland Security Chair Representative admitted that he's "extremely concerned that Syrian and ISIS recruiters can use the internet at lightning speeds to recruit followers in the United States and then activate them to do whatever they want to do," Representative McCaul added.
