"Law & Order" provided an action-packed season 16. But the shocker of the show was Amaro (Danny Pino) exiting the series in order to pursue other acting projects. In the show, Amaro decides to spend time with his family and move to the West Coast. With Benson's partner gone, what lies ahead for the squad in season 17?

While season 16 was about family, season 17 will be about transitions and changes in the team. Executive producer Warren Leight spoke to Entertainment Weekly where he made it clear that Amaro's exit will certainly send ripples across the squad. Everyone will question their purpose in life.

"Amaro's departure is one that makes other characters go, 'If he left, why am I still here?' Can they find a renewed purpose? Or does it cause them to question their own paths? That's usually what happens when someone leaves the group, it makes everybody else think about what they're doing", the producer explained.

Major changes occur in the team now that Benson's partner is gone. As many fans know, Benson becomes lieutenant. However, a new cast member may join the team or an existing cast member who left the squad might re-join the team in the upcoming season.

According to Vineport, rumors are circulating that rookie detective Sonny Carisi will replace Pino's character as Olivia's new partner in taking down the bad guys. Additionally, filming for season 17 has already begun and the publication reports that a special story or feature will precede the new season of "Law & Order".

Moreover, the show will be kept intriguing with the help of a new transgender story arc. Viewers will see a transgender-inspired storyline involving a teenager. Also, fans had better stop waiting with bated breath for a love story involving Benson, since there are no such plans for her character in season 17.

"Law & Order: SVU" returns to NBC this fall.
