'Longmire' season 5 update: Netflix quiet about show's fate; Robert Taylor supports Twitter campaign

(Official Facebook)

When "Longmire" was cancelled by A&E after three seasons, its creators and fans found its "salvation" with Netflix. With all 10 episodes for the fourth season already available for viewing, audiences now jump the gun and ask: "What about season 5?"

As fans make some noise online via a petition and events for a renewed season of "Longmire," Netflix remains silent. But if fans continue on the same path of campaigns from last year, who knows — maybe, just maybe, Netflix will cave in once again and come up with season 5.

Just a little recap, fans have created what CarterMatt coins as a "social media stampede" last year. The stampede was done to catch the attention of Netflix — or any network and Internet streaming service, actually — in hopes that they will pick it up for season 4. The fans used the same hashtags to generate as much tweets as possible. It worked, obviously; and the fans are hoping to replicate the results with season 5.

Viewers of the Robert Taylor-starred crime drama has gone to Twitter once again and launched a new campaign for season 5. Last week, they used the hashtag #LongmireS5NETFLIX, with actor Robert Taylor also joining the fun via a video tweet from Orb Agency

So far, the campaign has been doing so well that any network would have been rushed to make a decision. But Netflix is not just any network. It has been known to take things slow when it comes to announcing whether or not a show is picked up for a new season. They might also be waiting for full numbers on "Longmire," as there's a high probability that casual fans are still catching up on all episodes and other Netflix users might be discovering the show just now. That means it might be awhile before everybody gets word on the crime drama's fate.

One thing is sure, though: it would bode well for Netflix to actually renew the show for season 5, not just because it has a strong online presence but also because it widens the service's demographics. Taylor's show may not be as widely-popular as "House of Cards" but it caters to a demographic that Netflix has hitherto not yet tapped.

More news about "Longmire" season 5 will be reported here as soon as they they become available.
