LA Lakers 2015 NBA trade rumors, news: Time to shake up the roster and get new names

(USA Today Sports / Reuters)Kobe Bryant is set to return for the Los Angeles Lakers next season, but he is hoping that new names will come as well.

For a big market team, falling into mediocrity is simply unacceptable. And for the Los Angeles Lakers, what they went through during the regular season in 2015 was even below mediocre.

With all too many reasons falling on their laps, they had one of the worst seasons in their history and were second to the last team in the Western Conference with a 21-61 record.

Kobe Bryant was absent for the most part as he suffered from injuries, but his presence would have changed their record slightly, as they simply lack the building pieces behind the Laker great.

Now this off-season, they have to get busy and sign new players in order to rebuild a franchise in dire need of change.

It surely helps that they recently won the second pick in the NBA Draft. It will help them get a building block on a relatively cheap price, but money is the least of their issues now.

The Lakers have around $25-30 million to spend on a decent contract to get a new player to turn things around for them. There are too many holes to fill and players to move in order for them to re-establish their dominance in the West, but on the guard position is where they should concentrate first.

Sure they have a budding star with Jordan Clarkson, but he cannot do everything on his own and will certainly need a playmaker and shot-maker to help him improve his game.

Jeremy Lin's contract is up and it is likely that he will not be returning to the Lakers, as he has failed to live up to his past performances with the New York Knicks.

So who's available for them? There are two names that quickly to mind - one is Rajon Rondo of the Dallas Mavericks and the other is Goran Dragic of the Miami Heat.

Rondo has had a forgettable time with the Mavericks. Brought by Rick Carlisle to help lift Dallas into contenders in the West, the result has been a point guard who has clashed with his coach.

He was benched in the middle of their playoff series against the Houston Rockets and has probably played his final match with the Mavericks.

What Rondo brings to the table is a real playmaker who can help make the players around him improve. He has excellent court vision and is also handy at the defensive end. He lacks finishing with outside shots, but he can skim his way through defenses and get a basket underneath.

Add Bryant's affinity with the guard and it seems that they are a match for the Lakers' back-court.

Meanwhile, Dragic is a point guard built from the same mold as Steve Nash. A pass-first point guard who can still be an offensive threat, Dragic has it all. He did say that he enjoyed playing for Miami, but revealed that he also believes he is worth a max contract. The Heat may be unable to give him that, but the Lakers surely can.

There are many choices for the Lakers, but movement is needed if they want to improve. If they miss the boat on Dragic and Rondo, then other possible additions would be big men like the Detroit Pistons' Greg Monroe or the Portland Trail Blazers' LaMarcus Aldridge.
