Macbook Air Retina will launch this year? Rumors say no display upgrade till middle of next year

Fans of the lightweight Macbook Air may have to wait a little longer for the Retina Display edition, as reports note that it will not see spotlight until mid-2015. The Air is the only computer in Apple, Inc.'s Mac lineup that ships without the extreme-resolution display.

A number of reasons are quoted as to why Apple has not released Macbook Air with Retina Display. According to Apple Insider, the delay has something to do with suppliers.

"It's been said that part of the hold-up for the new notebook is short supply of Intel's next-generation 14-nanometer Broadwell chips. Intel's new chips are said to allow the notebook to have a fan-less design along with power saving advantages," Apple Insider's report states.

Engadget, on the other hand, offers a logical explanation as to why it the Cupertino-based tech giant is having trouble integrating Retina Display with its most portable laptop line.

"You can summarize the biggest problem with two words: battery life. Stuffing more pixels into an LCD typically requires not just stronger backlights (since there's less light reaching each pixel), but also graphics processing powerful enough to draw all that extra content," Jon Fingas of Engadget argues.

Macbook Air, however, received a minor boost early this year, with the addition of Haswell processors to increase speed and battery life.

Apple's thin laptops are available in two models: 11-inch and 13-inch, denoting the display size, which sell for $899 and $999 respectively. The price reduction that happened months ago paved the way for rumors of a Macbook Air Retina coming out this year.

At present, Apple has employed the Retina Display technology on its iPhone, iPad, Macbook Pro and the latest iMac with its stunning 5K display.
