'Marco Polo' season 3 renewal updates: Benedict Wong willing to reprise role as Kublai Khan; is the show too expensive for TV?

(Facebook/MarcoPoloMP)There are speculations that Benedict Wong's schedule will delay the series.

The adventures of famed traveler and merchant "Marco Polo" might come to an abrupt end as rumors abound that the series won't be returning for a third season.

The Netflix series has brought to life the travels and experiences of Marco Polo, a Venetian merchant whose book, "The Travels of Marco Polo," introduced Europeans to Central Asia and China. It's been said that Polo's chronicles inspired Christopher Columbus and many noted explorers.

The series admittedly had a slow start, but soon gained momentum among viewers, with the first season focused on Polo's (Lorenzo Richelmy) early years in the court of Kublai Khan (Benedict Wong) and the second highlighting the Mongol emperor's quest for more power.

While "Marco Polo" received good reviews and high ratings, rumors strangely surfaced that the show won't be renewed for a third season. Some reports have alluded to the show's large budget. The series is admittedly the second most expensive TV show to be produced in the world. Its $90 million budget falling a close second to HBO's "Game of Thrones."

While the show's budget is indeed humongous, it's believed to be worth every penny as the lavish sets, costumes, and fight scenes are what have attracted viewers in the first place.

However, some are saying the alleged cancellation of the series was due to Wong's schedule. The British actor is said to be swamped with his role in "Doctor Strange," where he will star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch. Wong had dismissed the rumors and affirmed his commitment to reprise his role as Kublai Khan in "Marco Polo." Unfortunately, rumors still persist that production for the series will still be delayed because of him.

Co-star Richelmy has also been hit with rumors that he might be leaving the series, given that he has accepted other projects. But some reports have mentioned that he had given assurances that he won't be leaving the series and is just waiting for its renewal.

Fans would just have to wait and hope that Netflix would look kindly on the series and renew it for another season.
