Mercedes-Benz has announced that it is developing a premium pick-up truck but has kept much of its development under wraps. Numerous outlets have reported that Mercedes is still deciding between two names – the X-Class or the Z-Class. However, German automaker is reportedly leaning more towards the X-Class as the name evokes the rugged design of the truck and its off-road capabilities.

According to Car Advice AU, an Australian design firm has uncovered the first details regarding the upcoming premium pick-up truck. The Mercedes-Benz X-Class truck is being developed in partnership with Nissan. It will be based on the Nissan Navara NP300's platform. The architecture of the platform supports a five-link rear suspension that provides a more stable driving experience.

Based on the statement of a Daimler executive, the decision to use Nissan's platform was agreed upon in order to lower costs. "Yes, to come to an attractive price we are using a common platform, but all the rest is done by Mercedes – to design, develop the vehicle specifically to meet Mercedes criteria," said Thomas Weber.

The forthcoming X-Class premium truck will only be offered in a dual-cab set-up. It will come in three trims – the entry-level model, a mid-range model and the top-tier model. The standard truck will come with a rear-wheel drive system while the top-of-the-line trim will feature a four-wheel drive system.

Mercedes will also offer two powertrain options. The first engine option is Navara's 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 188 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. It has a towing capacity of 3,000 kg. The second option would be Mercedes-Benz's 3.0-liter six-cylinder model that produces 255 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, with a towing capacity of 3,500 kg.

In terms of design, the X-Class will feature similar cues as Mercedes' B-Class vehicles. Interiors will come with an infotainment system, a B-Class dashboard layout, satellite navigation and a 360-degree camera. It will also come with AMG styling but without the AMG badging. Finally, the premium truck will be equipped with Mercedes-Benz wheels.

The Mercedes-Benz X-Class premium truck is expected to launch sometime in 2019. It will be sold in Latin America, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Mercedes has not announced whether the premium pick-up truck will be arriving in the U.S. Pricing is expected to range from about $42,000 to $56,000.
