Miami Heat 2015 trade rumors: What's next for Mario Chalmers?

Amidst speculation about Miami Heat desperately trying to re-sign Goran Dragic for a long-term deal, the question now remains whether Mario Chalmers still has a future with the Florida team.

Currently in his seventh season with the Heat, Chalmers rose to fame during the "Big Three" era when Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James were carrying Miami throughout the season.

People saw the three stars placing pressure on the young Chalmers as the point guard desperately tried to learn the game and establish himself as a true starting point guard.

And he has the rings to show for that, helping Miami win the title in 2012 and 2013 and during those times he averaged 9.8 and 8.6 points per game, respectively. He also played around 27 minutes per game in both seasons to help Miami have an oversized guard to lockdown their opponents' ball-handlers.

However, Chalmers' effectiveness has started to diminish as the season progressed. Despite making it to the NBA Finals for the third straight year last season, "Rio" had little to no effect in the game, which saw the San Antonio Spurs dismantling the two-time defending champions.

Despite guarding a smaller and older Tony Parker, Chalmers was continuously outplayed and outgunned by the Frenchman.

As a result, this year, the Heat acquired the services of Dragic from the Phoenix Suns, effectively ending Chalmers' stint as the starting guard for the Heat.

Although he achieved his career high in scoring with 10.2 per game, he only started 37 of the 80 games he played, while shooting only 40% from the field – close to the worst in his career.

Now that Pat Riley and the rest of the Heat management clearly want Dragic to stay for the long-term, what use will Chalmers really be for the team?

He would probably be used as a makeweight for a possible trade as the Heat continue to try and rebuild into a contender. But one thing is certain. Chalmers needs to go elsewhere if he wants to grow more.
