Microsoft Surface Phone news: Specs revealed, but phone will not be available this year

(Reuters/Rickey Rogers/Files)Microsoft will release its Surface Phone in 2018 or 2019.

Microsoft will be releasing its new flagship Surface Phone to officially compete with the mobile phone market.

The Surface Phone will reportedly have similar unique design as those of the Surface Book and the Surface Pro. Users must not expect a curved design and metallic body similar to that of the phone brands in the market, as Microsoft has a record of coming up with its own design.

However, the device's overall appearance might feature a foldable hinged design. As revealed by its patent acquisition, the device will have the ability to be folded to the size of a phone from a standard tablet-shaped physical display.

The phone might also sport the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835. This will demand a higher battery output, which reports peg at 2,900 to 3,000 mAh — the current battery output of its competitors iPhone 7 and Samsung Galaxy 7.

Reports also claim that the device might feature an Intel Kaby Lake processor should the newer chipset become unavailable.

As for the operating system, Microsoft may opt to use its own software than use Android. Reports claim that it may run with a 64-bit version of the Windows 10.

Other features of the phone include the 20-megapixel Carl Zeiss rear camera, liquid cooling technology, and an Active-Matrix Organic Light-emitting Diode display. It will also sport the "Continuum," Microsoft device's ability to run a display to a large screen from the phone itself.

In an interview with the Australian Financial Review as reported by Express, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed the company's intent to bring their new product to the top of the market by focusing on quality.

"We will continue to be in the phone market not as defined by today's market leaders, but by what it is that we can uniquely do in what is the most ultimate mobile device," Nadella said.

"We don't want to be driven by just envy of what others have, the question is, what can we bring? That's where I look at any device form factor or any technology, even AI," the CEO further added.

The device will be available in late 2018 or 2019, despite reports of being launched with the release of Windows 10 update. It will cost around $699–$1,100.
