Microsoft Surface Phone release date, specs rumors: Flagship device to belong to high-end category

The Microsoft Surface Phone has been in the rumor mill for quite some time but there is not much to know about the device, until recently.

At the Build Tour, corporate vice president of Windows Kevin Gallo was able to give some hints on the development of the next Windows Phone. As reported by The Register, Gallo said that the Windows phone will belong to the high-end category and will be suited for the enterprise market.

Although Gallo didn't specifically mention the name Surface Phone, he confirmed that the company will concentrate more on the enterprise market and will no longer just focus its efforts on the entry level market. Gallo explained that pushing for low-end devices will never do well when it comes to sales.

"We're really aligned to what we've done on the Windows desktop, which is we'll lead with some high end and category innovation like we've done with Surface, and OEMs will go and build the breadth of the catalog."

Besides saying what the next Windows phone will be, Gallo didn't share anything specific about the device.

Given that this next smartphone will be a high-end device, it is expected to run on a Snapdragon 830 chipset coupled with 8 GB of RAM. Nashville Chatter also reported that the Surface Phone may come in three variants, depending on the memory capacity.

The device was initially rumored to be released before 2016 ends, but more recent reports suggest that Surface Phone will be available by spring 2017 and will be preloaded with the Windows 10 Redstone 2, which is also expected to have rolled out by that time.

Given that the Surface Phone will have powerful specs, it is exciting news for all fans of the brand, but nothing has been set on stone yet. Microsoft has yet to officially confirm its plans for the next Surface Phone so readers need to take the reports with a pinch of salt at the moment.
