Microsoft Surface Pro 4 report puts debut at mid-May

After speculations that Microsoft would present the Surface Pro 4 at the recently concluded developer-centric BUILD 2015 conference failed to materialize, fresh reports now claim that the company will unveil its laptop/hybrid tablet at a special event to be held in mid-May.

There have been rumors that the next Surface Pro 4 would be a laptop-tablet hybrid and mark a huge leap from the current Surface Pro 3. The Surface Pro 4 is expected to come in two models, a 12-inch and a 14-inch variant, both bearing the same 2K display. Microsoft's upcoming hybrid device will come with 1 terabyte of storage and will be LTE-ready with Xbox game streaming support and a battery that could last up to 10 hours on video playback. The laplet is expected to come with a 3.5MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear-facing shooter, with both capable of taking 1080p videos.

The 12-inch version of the Surface Pro 4 is rumored to be powered by a Broadwell processor and the 14-inch variant is speculated to run on powerful Intel i5 and i7 processors. But recent leaks on a Chinese publication 36kr.com had claimed that the Surface Pro 4 would sport the same 12-inch screen with a similar 2,160 x 1,440-pixel resolution as its predecessor, and feature Intel's 5th-generation Core processor with a fanless design.

Microsoft is widely expected to launch the Surface Pro 4 only after releasing its new operating system, Windows 10, in October. But some reports had suggested that the Redmond giant could unveil its upcoming hybrid device at the BUILD developer conference that ended on Friday, though there was no official announcement at the event. Now, according to new reports, Microsoft will take the wraps off the Surface Pro 4 tablet at a special event to be held held in mid-May.

The latest rumor could be based on the fact that the high-end Surface Pro 3 tablet had made its official debut on May 20 last year. But Microsoft still hasn't sent out any invites for a Surface event to be held in May and it remains to be seen if the company's most awaited tablet "that can replace your laptop," finally arrives this month.
