Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release date: Kaby Lake-powered tablets to launch in October?

(Microsoft)The Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (pictured) could be joined by the new Surface Pro 5 this October.

The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is rumored to be released sometime this year. In terms of release dates, there are currently two possible release windows. Some reports suggest that the fifth-generation Surface Pro tablet will arrive as early as June. Meanwhile, there are other reports that say it will be released in October.

The current Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet is already powered by Intel's latest sixth-generation Skylake processors. If recent reports are to be believed, Microsoft is apparently interested in Intel's upcoming Kaby Lake CPU. It is expected to launch during the Computex 2016 this June. If that is the case, then the Surface Pro 5 will more likely launch in October. This would also be more consistent since the Surface Pro 4 launched in October 2015.

Microsoft could also focus on other new features and improvements, if the Surface Pro 5 will be released next month. Rumored specs include a 4K Ultra HD display with a 3,840 x 2,160 screen resolution. Microsoft was also reportedly developing an improved Surface Pen with a rechargeable battery to replace the current AAAA battery-powered stylus. The new Surface Pen will be charged via a magnetic dock located somewhere in the tablet.

As Microsoft has already started introducing the USB Type-C port in some of its recent smartphone releases, the Surface Pro 5 is also likely to receive the USB Type-C port when released.

The Surface Pro tablet has been positively received by consumers. However, the main complaint so far has been about the tablet's battery capacity. Microsoft will surely address this issue and the Surface Pro 5 will most likely get a more powerful battery.

Microsoft has not confirmed the Surface Pro 5 so these reports are still mainly speculative. More details for the fifth-generation Surface Pro tablet will be released in the coming weeks and months.
