One of the most enduring franchises in video gaming realm, Mortal Kombat, is returning in 2015.

The storyline of Mortal Kombat X will be a carry-over of the previous installment, but is set more than two decades later.

"It's a direct continuation, but the timespan it crosses is 25 years in length," Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon explained during an interview with IGN.

He continued, "There are periods that are directly after MK9, then there are periods that are five, ten, 15 and 20 years out. A lot of the events take place 25 years after where we see older versions of the characters, like Cassie Cage and all that. But it does jump around in time; it's not a linear thing."

Kombat Tether also had the chance to sit down with Boon at the recent Gamescom event.

He hinted that Mortal Kombat X will have fresh and brandnew features:

"You know we're trying to just, philosophically, introduce as much new elements as we can. You know Mortal Kombat 9 was really a like a tribute to the first three games, bringing everything back, all the backgrounds; so many of them were things that you saw from before. We are taking the opposite approach now, we want to have as much newness as possible to the game," Boon hinted during the interview.

There are also speculations that there will be a total of 24 playable characters on the Mortal Kombat X roster: 12 old fighters and 12 new faces.

When asked on Twitter whether the top row in the character selection menu is reserved for returning characters and the bottom row for the neophytes, Boon responded with: "Seems accurate.."

At this point, Richard Walker of Xbox Achievements is very positive about the game:

"Mortal Kombat X is shaping up to be the strongest installment in the series yet, as NetherRealm looks to provide a comprehensive cast of characters with their own set of three distinct variants. It's a novel idea that promises to make MK X one of the most diverse and interesting fighting games we've played, outside of Ultra Street Fighter IV."
