Moto G3 vs. Moto G2: two popular budget Moto smartphones from Motorola but which one's better?

The release of the Moto G3 was met with a lot of excitement, as its predecessor, the second generation Moto G, has been extremely popular. Here is how last year's best selling Moto G2 compares to the newly released, Moto G3.

Design

Motorola sure wanted to ensure that they have a succesful device in their hands with the release of the Moto G3. The company has made it customizeable, so users can simply go on the Moto Maker website to choose from various materials and colors for the back panel. Irrespective of the design however, the device is made of plastic.

As for the second generation Moto G, it also has a plastic build, whose back can be easily replaced with other panels available.

Unlike the Moto G2, however, the Moto G3 has an IPX7 rating and can therefore be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes.

Display

When it comes to screen size, the Moto G3 and the second generation Moto device are alike. Each has an IPS LCD screen measuring 5.0 inches with a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels and a density of 294 pixels per inch.

Specs

The hardware of the Moto G3 has been improved. It now comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset, a CPU with four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4 GHz and an Adreno 306 GPU. The Moto G2, on the other hand, has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipset, a CPU with four Cortex-A7 cores clocked 1.2 GHz and an Adreno 305 GPU.

Memory

Both devices have slots for memory cards and each can be used to add up to 32 GB of external storage. As for RAM, the 8 GB Moto G3 has 1 GB and its 16 GB model has 2 GB while the Moto G2 has 1 GB.

Price

The unlocked Moto G2 and Moto G3 are each priced at $180. They both come without a contract.
