It has been more than a year since Motorola released its third and most recent generation of the Moto X phones. Since then, Motorola has not released anything from the line and remains tight-lipped about it. However, new leaks that have surfaced online suggest that there could be a Moto X for 2016.

According to reports, the Moto X rumors reignited after popular leakster Evan Blass released an image of what he calls a "mystery Moto" on his Twitter. The latest flagship phones from Motorola — the Moto Z, Moto Z Play, and Moto Z Force — are received positively by the market. However, there are still users out there who prefer the X-brand and are hoping to see an upgraded version of it this year.

Although a previously leaked Moto model numbers XT1662 and XT1663 referred to the new Moto X, the leaked photo is said to resemble another leaked image of the Moto M phone, which made rounds on the internet last month.

Other sources point out that the new leaked photo looks the same as the previous Moto X Play version. Its design resembles that of the X Play but with an improved front-facing flash for the camera and a thinner-side bezel.

Meanwhile, according to other reports, the Moto X 2016 is rumored to have been spotted on the CCC certification online portal. The specs for the said phone that were found on the site include Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 as its processing chipset matched with 4 GB of RAM.

It will also be sporting a 5.5-inch AMOLED display, which is rumored to be shatterproof. It may also become modular like the Z-line.

Although the Moto X line did not have successive hits for the past years, it gained a huge following after the release of the X Play last year because of its decent specs and a high-performing battery.
