Rick Osterloh, Motorola's President, has confirmed that the company is trying "to stay on a roughly annual cycle for all of our products, including Moto X." Since the previous Moto X models were introduced in August and September, respectively, there is now a good chance that the third generation Moto X will be launched around those same months this year as well.

Osterloh's comment came as a reply to a question by a customer posted on Twitter regarding the company's plans for the next Moto as part of the #AskRickO initiative. When the Twitter user asked Osterloh if the launch of the 2015 version of the Moto X could be expected at around the same time as the previous years, Osterloh replied in the positive.

The second-generation Moto X is now six months old and Motorola has been widely expected to release its successor sometime later this year. There are no details available about the internal hardware and specifications of the third generation Moto X. However, Motorola and Qualcomm had recently confirmed that a new Moto flagship smartphone powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor would be introduced this year, which suggests that the third generation Moto X could use the Snapdragon 810 SoC.

The Snapdragon 810 processor has been witnessing some overheating issues in other handsets, though manufacturers have resolved the issue through proper CPU throttling. Qualcomm is working on a cooler Snapdragon 815 successor and has already officially introduced the Snapdragon 820. There is a possibility that Motorola could choose either the S815 or S820 chip over the 810 one to power the third generation Moto X. Similar to the current second generation Moto X, its successor is also expected to be customizable via Moto Maker, running near stock Android. Stay tuned for the latest news on Motorola's Moto X 3rd Gen (2015) for the specs and release date.
