Motorola was the second OEM to release the Android 5.1 Lollipop update after it became available for Google's Nexus devices and it is now believed that the company's other devices, including Moto X, Moto G, Moto Droid and Moto E, could be skipping the 5.0 update and will be instead be directly updated to 5.1 Lollipop.

After the 2014 Moto X Pure Edition became the first Motorola device to receive the Android 5.1 Lollipop update, the company has begun updating its Moto G Google Play Edition (GPE). The company's list of devices that will be next to receive the Android 5.1 Lollipop include the first-generation and second-generation models, such as Moto X, Moto G, Moto G 4G LTE, DROID Turbo, DROID Maxx, DROID Mini and Moto E.

David Schuster, Motorola's Senior Director of Software Management, recently stated on his Google account that most of the company's devices would skip the 5.0 update and instead jump directly to 5.1 Lollipop. According to David, the 2013 Moto X, the 2013 Moto G, the 4G Moto G and the Moto E will all be updated directly to Android 5.1 Lollipop instead of getting 5.0 first.

Android Lollipop 5.1 is said to bring a host of features, such as support for multiple SIM cards on devices with multiple slots and HD calling between compatible devices running Android 5.1 Lollipop. The software update also enhances device protection by locking the phone until the owner signs in with his or her Google account even in the case of a factory reset.

However, it is unclear exactly when Motorola's smartphones will receive their much awaited Android Lollipop 5.1 update. Also, the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update was recently found inside the Android SDK, indicating that the 5.1.1 Lollipop update is getting ready for release. So the question that now arises is whether Motorola will skip 5.1 for its devices and update them directly to 5.1.1.
