Moto X Play vs. Moto X 2014: The Moto X Play is a big step up

The Moto X, which was released last year, was the second generation device in the lineup. And since it turned out to be extremely popular, a follow up device has been released in the form of the Moto X Play, which falls into the phablet category. Here is how these two devices compare.

Design

The Moto X is the smaller of the two devices and it falls into the smartphone category. However, it has the same customization options as the bigger Moto X Play. Both devices can be customized on the Moto Maker website where the Moto X Play can be outfitted with a silicone, leather or wooden back panel while the Moto X can be designed with a wood, leather and plastic back panel. Each device has a metal band running along its edge, as well as metal accents. However, they unfortunately do not have fingerprint scanners.

Display

The display on the Moto X Play is bigger and it comes with AMOLED screen measuring 5.5 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and density of 403 pixels per inch. As for the Moto X it has an AMOLED screen but it is smaller than the version its competitor and measures 5.2 inches with a resolution 1080 x 1920 pixels and density of 424 pixels per inch.

Specs

The latest Snapdragon 810 chipset is not being used by the Moto X Play as it is not the flagship model from Motorola. Instead, it comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset, along with an octa-core CPU comprised of four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at1.7 GHz and four clocked at 1.0 GHz and an Adreno 405 GPU. The second generation Moto X, on the other hand, has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, a Krait 400 CPU with four cores clocked at 2.5 GHz and an Adreno 330 GPU.

Memory

There is no memory slot on the Moto X, so external storage cannot be added. The Moto X Play, however, has a slot which can be used to add up to 128 GB of memory. As for RAM, both devices are equal as each has 2 GB onboard.

Price

The Moto X 2014 costs $99 with a two-year contract. As for the Moto X Play, its price has not yet been revealed but it is expected to cost around $300.
