'Mr. Robot' season 2 spoilers, release date: Series premieres in July

(Facebook / Mr. Robot)Actor Rami Malek is set to return to the small screen to continue the journey of Elliot on "Mr. Robot" season 2.

The second season of the hit series "Mr. Robot" will premiere on July 13, and fans of the show have been speculating on behind-the-scene photos released by cast and crew.

Season 1 ended with the lead character Elliot Alderson's realization that he has mental issues and that Mr. Robot is his deceased father whose persona he has taken over. He realized it was actually him who was leading Fsociety the entire time and that Mr. Robot was the name of the shop his father used to own.

Actor Christian Slater played Mr. Robot in the first season and has been cast again for the sequel. Even when Elliot has realized who he is in his life, he continues to haunt him, and Slater is expected to continually appear to guide and confuse Elliot at the same time.

It has been suggested that while Fsociety succeeded in taking down Evil Corp, Evil Corp is just a small fraction of the bigger enemy at play. At the Television Critics Association press tour, show creator Sam Esmail said, "There will be a lot more backstory that will be shown, the timeline will get a little clearer — not 100 percent clear, because where's the fun in that? But a little clearer … it really is about Elliot trying to reconcile what this means in seeing Mr. Robot. The series is filling in the blanks of the past and the present of this character … It's about a guy who becomes aware of this delusion he's been having."

In season 1 it is shown that his mother's abusive ways and continuous reference to his father have led Elliot to suffer emotionally. While this could have been a big part of his mental condition, other traumatic experiences could also be accounted for.

Actress Frankie Shaw also returns to reprise her role as Elliot's ex-girlfriend Shayla Nico. Since her character was killed off, she is speculated to appear in numerous flashbacks. Others also speculate that she will appear as Elliot's illusion as he strives to get rid of his father's control over him.

"Mr. Robot" season 2 returns on July 13 on USA Network.
