NBA 2K15 release date in review: Positive ratings, though face scan feature problematic

On Oct. 7, the time has finally arrived for the official NBA 2K15 release date on consoles and PC and early review comments are positive, but many are grappling particularly with the game's new face-scanning technology, which was at the center of pre-release hype,

Polygon's Owen Good, who is upset about this NBA 2K15 feature, feels that the developers have not actually tried it in an actual living room.

"No, the problem is not lighting, background or the size of my mug. The problem is that moving your face a micrometer is enough to throw off the PlayStation Camera's recognition for purposes of NBA 2K15's face scan. I have no idea what things are like with the Xbox One's Kinect 2.0 sensor. But maybe — just maybe — this is a poorly designed application that depends on an optimal set of conditions that are not present in many consumers' living room environments," he wrote.

Apparently, Good is not alone in this experience as Seth Rosenthal of SB Nation posted a number of monstrous looking results of the game's face scan.

Sam Laird of Mashable hopes that 2K Sports will do something about this glitch, while many gamers vow to keep away from the feature.

Face scan aside, the overall reviews of gaming and sports enthusiasts and pundits are favorable.

"The first game of the beloved 2K series to hit next-gen consoles, NBA 2K14, was a jaw-dropping visual showcase that cloaked a sub-par collection of modes and features. It looked better than any sports game that came before it, but it felt like the start of something bigger," Nick Schwartz of USA Today said.

CBS Sports say that NBA 2K15 provides an immersive gaming experience like never before, thus, giving the community a glimpse of the future of NBA gaming.

NBA 2K15's rival, NBA Live 15 from EA Sports is coming to Xbox One and PS4 on Oct. 28.
