NBA trade rumors 2016: Celtics, Mavs to exchange big men?

The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks are contending squads in their respective conferences. But for both to enhance their rosters, there was a suggestion for them to switch centers.

In the potential deal, the Celtics are getting Andrew Bogut, while the Mavericks are adding Amir Johnson.

To others, this exchange is nonsensical and will not be helpful to the squads involved. However, there are positives in this and that is why it might happen in the trade period of the 2016-17 regular season.

First, for the Celtics, they are looking for an "impact player" and Bogut could be that guy. The pride of Australia is a one-time champion and his experience will be big for them, especially in the playoffs. Having him gives head coach Brad Stevens two veteran players at the no. 5 position who are capable of starting.

Aside from Bogut's presence in the paint and rebounding, another contribution he may have is in the assists department. The 31-year-old is considered by many as one of the best passing big men in the National Basketball Association (NBA) today.

However, the biggest setback for Bogut is his health and this might lead to the C's saying "no" once he is offered to them.

The Mavs, on the other hand, are acquiring Johnson who is a defensive upgrade for them.

Dallas has a lot of offensive options, but on the other end of the floor, it must improve. Johnson fits the bill as he is a good rebounder and last season, he showed his ability to stay in the passing lanes averaging one steal per game.

Together with defense, Johnson can also score when there are openings. A few years ago, the 29-year-old averaged double-digits on offense for back-to-back seasons.

For now, this is just a suggestion, but the Celtics and Mavericks might soon hold talks that will make it happen.
