While pundits have ruled the company out for this year's console war, Nintendo has fought back and is looking to roundup 2014 stronger with good reviews for its upcoming New Nintendo 3DS release date and impressive sales of Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8.

The New Nintendo 3DS sports faster processing chips compared to its predecessor and sports customizable faceplates. The device also highlights 3D effects better.

Wired was honest enough to mention that there is very minute difference between the old and New Nintendo 3DS. However, the internal structure of the latest device is going to be relevant in the near future.

However, Nintendo has offered an explanation as to why the New Nintendo 3DS will not land on US and European soil until 2015.

"In Japan, the total number of sales of Nintendo 3DS has reached nearly 17 million in the three and a half years since its launch. It is almost the same as the lifetime sales of GameBoy Advance released in 2001, which implies that it is reasonable that the sales of Nintendo 3DS have been temporarily slow moving in the Japanese market. This is one of the reasons we needed to bring New Nintendo 3DS/3DS XL to the market this year," Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said.

Several game developers have abandoned Nintendo following the slow start of Nintendo Wii U. The company then turned to their homegrown franchises and characters to generate revenues.

"This year is different to last year, when we headed into the year-end without momentum or good software prospects...The goal is fully achievable," Iwata said.

Since its release earlier this year, Mario Kart 8 has already posted a total of 3.49 million units sold. Meanwhile, Super Smash Bros. has been smashing the competition on Metacritic, a website that collects reviews from gaming experts and consumers. It is rated at 94/100, making it the best-reviewed game of all time on the site.
