New Orleans Pelicans rumors: Pelicans to offer Anthony Davis massive deal

(USA Today Sports / Reuters)Anthony Davis of the New Orleans Pelicans.

The New Orleans Pelicans are looking to handsomely reward their superstar with a new offer as they hope that Anthony Davis will stay with the team for a long time.

According to reports, the organization is preparing to give an offer for a five-year, $143 million contract extension.

If this goes through, this would forego the need for Davis to hit the free agency after the 2015-16 NBA season.

Now with most players worrying about having a contract that will make them a free agent in 2017 when the salary cap increases from $67 million to $90 million, the Pelicans have taken this in consideration in giving their star a new contract.

Davis' current contract will expire at the end of the 2015-16 season but will be a restricted free agent and the Pelicans will undoubtedly match any offer that teams will give the big man.

With that in mind, they have the leverage to keep Davis in the team and continue building around him and hope that things work out in New Orleans.

Behind the leadership of Davis, the Pelicans reached the NBA playoffs in the past season but were knocked out by the eventual champions the Golden State Warriors in four games.

Nevertheless, things are looking good for the Pelicans as they recently secured Alvin Gentry's signature as a new head coach which will help Davis' continued development in the league.

The number one pick in the 2012 Draft, Davis is already a two-time All-Star despite only playing three years in the league and has averaged career highs across his personal stats.

He has averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 2.9 blocks and 1.5 steals per game – all career highs.

At one point he was even considered an MVP candidate for helping the Pelicans throughout the season.

It should be expected that Davis will sign the contract and will stay with the Pelicans who are trying their best to show their appreciation for the star's efforts.
