New Orleans Pelicans trade rumors 2016: Anthony Davis' departure nearing?

Anthony Davis had a stellar performance in the New Orleans Pelicans' season opener but still they lost to the Denver Nuggets, 107-102. This defeat could lead to bigger problems for the franchise, specifically the potential departure of the young star.

In the loss to Utah, Davis tallied 50 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, seven steals and four blocks.

Davis' scoring output grouped him with the likes of legends Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, and Elgin Baylor as players who had at least 50 points in a season opener.

Despite this, Davis is unfulfilled since they failed to get the win. To others, this is just a normal defeat for New Orleans. But for some, it might be the start of the downfall between the Pelicans and the 23-year-old.

Davis might soon ask the Pelicans to trade him to a contending squad. This is possible, especially if they continue to struggle.

In the 2012 National Basketball Association (NBA) draft, the Pelicans (then-New Orleans Hornets) selected Davis no. 1 overall. Since his rookie year, the versatile big man has been impressive even if he is often troubled by injuries.

Unfortunately, despite Davis' efforts to help the Pelicans rise in the Western Conference and the entire league, they always come up short. Since he joined the franchise, they only made it to the playoffs once (2014-15 season). In that run, they got eliminated in the opening round by the Golden State Warriors.

This season is an opportunity for Davis and the Pelicans to see how far they can go. But if it turns ugly, then it might be time to part ways.

Finding takers for Davis is an easy job since he is desired by almost all of the teams in the league. His history of health setbacks does not overshadow his achievements and the potential he has.
