Nexus 6 vs iPhone 6 specs, price comparison: Google's flagship fare against Apple's megastar?

Google is back in the game with the launch of Nexus 6 by Motorola, but this also means that the new flagship smartphone is going up vs the top-selling Apple iPhone 6.

Unwrapped in Sept. 9, Apple, Inc.'s iPhone 6 has done tremendously well worldwide.

Meanwhile, Google has resurrected the Nexus smartphone brand with the Nexus 6.

The bigger Motorola-made Nexus wins the display specs category with 2560 x 1440 pixels resolution versus iPhone 6's 1334 x 750 pixels. However, the latter boasts a special Retina HD display.

Nexus 6 sports a 5.96-inch screen, which more closely matches that of the larger iPhone 6 Plus compared to the iPhone 6's 4.7-inch frame.

Google stuck with the standard Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for monitor protection, while Apple chose to be more innovative with a newly designed shatter-proof glass.

Specs-wise the Nexus 6 cameras are better with a 13 MP rear-facing camera and 2 MP front-facing camera. The iPhone 6 rear-facing camera is only at 8 MP, while the "selfie" camera is at 1.2 MP.

Another big difference is the Google Android OS the Nexus 6 uses, as one of the first devices to receive the all-new Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Meanwhile, iPhone 6 uses Apple's homegrown iOS 8 which was released in conjuction with the new smartphone.

Both Nexus 6 and iPhone 6 offer elegant designs, as well the same selling price starting at $649.

Apple's iPhone 6 models saw immense success as it closed its first weekend with more than 10 million units sold.

"Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn't be happier," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.

"We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin. While our team managed the manufacturing ramp better than ever before, we could have sold many more iPhones with greater supply and we are working hard to fill orders as quickly as possible," Cook added.

The pressure to do better is not exclusive to Google and its Nexus 6.

Samsung too is perhaps starting to build more muscles, attempting to reclaim lost glory with the release of Galaxy Note 4.
