Google has officially rolled out the Android 5.1.1 update to its flagship handsets, namely Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 9. The updated version of the operating system, which was first released on Nexus player and Samsung Galaxy S6, was offered over-the-air, with a factory image download option also available.

Although the new version does not bring any drastic changes in Android Lollipop, it does fix some bugs and crashes, as well as introduces several new features and user functionality improvements that will immediately become noticeable to users.

One of the more interesting tweaks brought by the update is the inclusion of additional interruption settings. This will enable users to specifically hand pick the notifications that are important enough for the phone to notify them about. The update enables users to not only choose whether or not to take a call, but also narrows it further down to a list of contacts a user prefers to take calls from.

Another exciting feature is the introduction of screen pinning. The feature enables the phone to remain locked on a certain app or menu option until a corresponding PIN is inputted. This function is perfect for people who would like to share something on their device, but aren't comfortable with others perusing on any other application.

Some users, however, are delighted to hear about a new security measure introduced by Android 5.1.1. The latest Android version has a lock function that enables the phone owner to render the phone unusable in the event of the device being stolen. While this is a small consolation for losing a device, it is a welcome precaution and a deterrent for phone thieves.

With the Nexus phones receiving the OTA update, several handsets can expect Android 5.1.1 very soon. In fact, there are already rumors about the upcoming release of Android M and phone owners who have not yet received the latest Lollipop release need not worry.
