Nintendo NX release date news: new console may be coming in 2016

Nintendo is still a little mum about its upcoming gaming console Nintendo NX, fearing that other companies like Microsoft and Sony will "steal" their videogame ideas. But they are starting to be generous about production updates and possible release dates.

Nintendo has just released a Q&A between its president Satoru Iwata and the shareholders during their 75th Annual General Meeting. In the meeting, the shareholders -- just like most Nintendo fans -- were curious about the upcoming console, Nintendo NX. And Iwata was adamant about not delving into deeper details because, like his previous statements, "it could be persuasive but it could also give other companies the opportunity to come up with counterplans or implement the ideas that they find interesting."

But even as Nintendo is keeping things under wraps about details on features and titles, news about production and possible release dates are now coming out. DigiTimes has just reported that the Japan-based company asked their supply partners to jumpstart the production this October.

Order might be finalized early February or March, 2016. And if things go accordingly, mass production will begin in May or June 2016, with the Nintendo NX hitting stores by July. Nintendo plans to ship 20 million units of their new console during its first year, so business insiders are speculating on a global launch rather than Nintendo's tradition of a gradual rollout.

Videogamers who own Nintendo's current consoles can put their worries at bay about the fate of their Wii U and 3DS. Iwata, in the same shareholders meeting, pointed out that it is only logical for them to keep producing titles for both consoles.

He also said that since Nintendo NX will be produced from scratch, "there already will be a certain volume of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U hardware widely existing in the market, so from a software business perspective, it would be highly inefficient to stop releasing titles for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U right after the launch of NX."

Stay tuned for more updates regarding the Nintendo NX's release.
