Nintendo NX rumor: New console to operate on Android?

(Reuters)

The new Nintendo NX is expected to launch this year, and it is in for a tough competition with the already well established Sony's PS4 and Microsoft's Xbox One. However, the lack of details from the company are making game enthusiasts still guessing the exact release date.

In an investors meeting, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima refused to talk about games or hardware that are still in the development stage. He would talk about the financial standing of the company instead, as reported by Nintendo Everything. He mentioned, though, that the next-gen Nintendo console is a work in progress, with its developments and plans towards the release now on a roll. He further admitted that they need more investments now than ever.

Kimishima also shared some tidbits with Time's Matt Peckham. He said in the interview that NX will be different and offer a new experience for gamers. "I can assure you we're not building the next version of Wii or Wii U... It's something where we have to move away from those platforms in order to make it something that will appeal to our consumer base."

The most valid speculation yet as to the release of the new system is coming from IGN's Nintendo-focused podcast titled "Nintendo Voice Chat." The hosts talked about the possibility of the Nintendo NX to be finally unveiled at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2016. The event is set to take place on June 14-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Interestingly, another rumor had surfaced that the gaming platform would be using Google's Android operating system, reported by Nikkei (translation via Kotaku). However, Nintendo was reportedly quick to shoot down the rumor.

Meanwhile, Dr. Serkan Toto, CEO of a Japan-based game industry consultancy firm, revealed in a tweet that Nintendo is working with third-party support in the development of the NX.

"Bandai Namco is currently developing several NX titles. 'Smash Bros' is planned to be a launch title. I am not sure about the date - yet," he wrote on Jan. 29.

While his followers were a little doubtful about this new piece of information, Toto reassured that his source situation is "very solid." He further responded, "Otherwise I wouldn't have tweeted."

For now, gamers will have to wait for an official announcement from Nintendo itself.
