Nintendo Switch release date, news: Pre-orders sell out fast; Nintendo president assures steady supply

(Facebook/NintendoSwitch)The Nintendo Switch will officially release on March 3.

Nintendo finally pulled the curtains off the Nintendo Switch last week and revealed some key details of the upcoming console, including pricing and its official release date in March. But with less than two months to go, will Nintendo be able to keep up with the outpour of demand for the hybrid console?

The Japanese gaming company faced a similar supply and demand issue in November when the NES Classic was rolled out. Nintendo had trouble supplying consumers with the console because of unanticipated demand. But Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo America, has assured everyone that this will not be the case for the Switch.

"We're working to make sure that the supply chain [for Switch] is robust and there is a steady flow of hardware," Fils-Aime told GameSpot, echoing his previous statement of shipping two million units all over the world. "The one piece we can't anticipate is the demand side of the equation but certainly from a supply, we feel like we're going to be well-positioned."

However, Polygon reveals that the Nintendo Switch has already sold out in major US retailers just three days after pre-orders opened. GameSpot, for one, has already exhausted its stock of the hybrid console — although it is apparently working with Nintendo on acquiring more units. Other retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us also don't have the Switch on hand anymore.

A lot of rumors and speculations circulated about the Nintendo Switch leading up to its debut last week. There was widespread belief that the console would launch on March 17 and have a price tag ranging from $200 to $250. However, with Nintendo's presentation, these rumors were proven false.

The Nintendo Switch will, in fact, be released on March 3 — earlier than expected. It will also carry a tag of $299, which is more than what was initially suspected.
