The Sam Miller-directed stalker thriller, 'No Good Deed,' raked in a surprising $24.5 million on its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, Bloomberg reports.

The movie, which cost $13.2 million to create, therefore trumps the highly successful 'Guardians of the Galaxy' in the box office race so far this year.

Box Office Mojo released a report that the movie was initially expected to make $18 on its opening weekend.

The movie was not released to the press prior to its release in hopes of keeping the movie "spoiler-free." The movie also used social media websites such as Instagram and Twitter to promote its opening night.

'No Good Deed' tells the story of how an unaware mother of two, Terri (Taraji P. Henson), is fallen victim to an escaped convict named Colin (Idris Elba).

Terri lets Colin into her home one night thinking that he needed help after his car broke down, while Colin was actually an escapee from a guarded van.

Colin was jailed for manslaughter, and the kind of terror he can bring to the home is what moviegoers paid to see.

According to a review by New York Times' Ben Kenigsberg, 'No Good Deed' might have favored from a familiar "Cape Fear"- kind of plot twist.

Kenigsberg also called out screenwriter Aimee Lagos' lack of imagination by using usual "stalker-victim" modals such as the power being "cut-off," and windows being broken.
