NVIDIA Titan X vs GTX 1080: Titan X sales to surpass GTX

(GeForce)The forthcoming NVIDIA Titan X which is set to be released by August 2.

Many thought that the GeForce GTX 1080 from graphics card maker NVIDIA would be the company's top of the line graphics processing unit (GPU). However, just barely months into the graphics card's release, another powerful card from the GPU manufacturer will be made available next month. That is the NVIDIA Titan X, which is said to be way faster and a better performer as compared to the GTX 1080.

Just like its GTX 10 relatives, the new graphics card will feature the same Pascal-based architecture. It is said that it has speeds of 11 teraflops which is over 20 percent faster than NVIDIA's current top-end card, the GTX 1080, which has speeds of 8.9 teraflops. Moreover, the Titan X will be fused with the latest GP102 processor, resulting in an impressive total of 3,584 Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) cores. The GTX 1080, on the other hand, is currently lodged with a GP104 chipset that only has 2,560 cores.

In addition, the upcoming card packs a massive 12 GB of double data rate type five X (GDDR5X) of video random access memory (VRAM) that will eventually have a bandwidth of 480 GB per second as compared to the GTX 1080 which has 8 GB. The card will also be powered by an eight-pin and a six-pin Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) connector, not to mention a thermal design power (TDP) capacity of 250 watts.

Meanwhile, it is said that the NVIDIA Titan X started as some sort of a wager from one of NVIDIA's engineers, Brian Kelleher. He challenged NVIDIA's chief executive officer Jen-Hsun Huang that the company could offer a much powerful graphics card that could pack speeds higher than 10 teraflops. Hence, the company came up with a monster that is the Titan X.

The NVIDIA Titan X will be out on August 2 and could be priced at $1,200.
