Oakland Raiders roster, free agency news 2016: Andre Holmes staying for one more season after reaching new deal

Wide receiver Andre Holmes, despite being pushed down the depth chart in the previous season, remains with the Oakland Raiders after reaching a one-year deal with the team he originally joined nearly three years ago.

Last season, Holmes was the third string wide receiver for the Raiders behind Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree. Because of his playing situation, he had his worst season in terms of production as a catcher since heading to Oakland.

In 16 games (one start) played in the 2015 season, Holmes only had 14 receptions for 201 yards and four touchdowns. The reception tally and receiving yards were a bit distant from his numbers during the 2014 season when he had 47 receptions for 693 yards (both career-bests) and also four touchdowns in 16 games (13 starts).

But even if the 27-year-old's numbers as a wide receiver went down, he did a good job as a member of the special teams, and in the previous campaign tallied a total of seven tackles, also having two forced fumbles.

The 2015 season was the second consecutive season that Holmes played 16 games.

It is likely that Holmes' role will not change for the 2016 season since he is efficiently contributing in both the receiving department (limited playing time) and special teams. However, this is also uncertain because the Raiders might make roster adjustments since the free agency period has already begun and the National Football League (NFL) Draft is approaching.

The Raiders aim to have a contending roster for the 2016 season since they again missed the playoffs in the 2015 season, finishing third in the American Football Conference (AFC) West with a 7-9 record. Last season's failed campaign was the 13th consecutive year Oakland failed to reach the postseason.

The last time the Raiders saw playoff action was in the 2002 season when they made it all the way to the Super Bowl (XXXVII), but lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
