Oklahoma City Thunder free agency, trade rumors 2016: Will Blake Griffin head back to OKC in 2017?

This year's free agency is a disaster for the Oklahoma City Thunder. But a year from now, they might be winners if they succeed in signing hometown player Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers.

(Reuters/Tom Szczerbowski-USA TODAY Sports)The Oklahoma City Thunder are reportedly planning to sign the Los Angeles Clippers' Blake Griffin next year.

The departure of former franchise superstar Kevin Durant was a huge blow for the Thunder. It was expected for him to stay after they again made it to the Western Conference Finals in the 2015-16 season. But it did not happen and the 2014 Most Valuable Player (MVP) took his talent to Oakland.

In the aftermath, the Thunder are still trying to figure out what their future plans will be now that there is no guarantee All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook is re-signing with them next year.

However, recently, the Thunder revoked their qualifying offer to guard Dion Waiters. What they can do now is use the money to grant Westbrook to a lucrative extension pact. They can then try to accomplish what the recent reports are suggesting — try to sign Griffin in next year's free agency and have another superstar duo in Oklahoma City.

Griffin can opt out of his existing contract with the Clippers following the 2016-17 season. Once the 27-year-old does, he is going to be a free agent and can ask for a bigger deal since another salary cap boost is expected.

When Griffin joins the free agency pool, the Thunder can then come in and try to lure him out of Los Angeles to bring him back home.

For now, that sounds like a plan for the Thunder but do not count on it happening that easily. Westbrook's side is communicating with the team but is yet to make a decision regarding his future after Durant left. Meanwhile, for Griffin, it looks like he is happy with the Clippers who are expected to do everything just to keep him.
