Oklahoma City Thunder free agency, trade rumors 2016: Blake Griffin no longer in team's future plans?

Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin was among the stars linked to the Oklahoma City Thunder during the off-season and it seemed like they were interested in adding him. That may no longer be the case after they signed Steven Adams and Victor Oladipo to extensions.

In a report by ClutchPoints, it was stated that inking Adams and Oladipo likely ended the Thunder's pursuit of Griffin because these contracts may not grant the Thunder enough cap space to sign the Clippers star once he opts out of his contract following the 2016-17 National Basketball Association (NBA) season.

Griffin's existing pact with the Clippers gives him a chance to enter free agency in 2017.

ClutchPoints also mentioned that the move might be the Thunder's way of securing a core that they will build around on as they continue moving on from the Kevin Durant era.

This likely means that Adams and Oladipo are joining Russell Westbrook in becoming the main guys for the squad.

Adams is the Thunder's starting center, and even if he is not filling the stat sheet similar with the other players in his position, he is an efficient guy for Oklahoma City. The big man is just 23 years old and he will still improve.

Meanwhile, Oladipo is a proven scorer and he is still growing as a player. This is scary for other teams because once he reaches his prime, who knows what he is capable of doing. Together with Westbrook, the 24-year-old gives the Thunder a potent backcourt duo that could carry the squad back to the NBA Finals in the future.

Griffin will be a significant upgrade, although for now, he is not included on the Thunder's priority list. Perhaps in the future he will again be targeted, but as of the moment, the idea of him coming back home to Oklahoma City is on the back burner.
