Orange Is the New Black Season 3 Spoilers: Vee may return; Piper's character develops through flashbacks

(Netflix/ComingSoon)

The Litchfield Penitentiary will open its doors again to the public on June 12 when Season 3 of "Orange Is The New Black" starts airing on Netflix. Season 2 ended with Vee, the main "villain," escaping and being run over by another escaping convict, Rosa. Alex, Piper's ex, also returns to prison, after being released earlier in Season 2.

According to showrunner Jenji Kohan, who spoke at a For Your Consideration event, there will be two pervading themes in the new season: faith and motherhood.

"It's lighter than Season 2, it's a season of faith, it's a season of motherhood, it's a progression of everyone's stories. I think we get deeper into our characters and we meet people."

The theme of faith and motherhood are prominently featured in the latest season 3 promotional poster, where images of 5 of the key characters are shown on seemingly religious candle holders (they look like they all have halos): Piper looking very peaceful and happy, Daya holding on to her baby bump with a smile on her face, Alex looking rocker chic, Crazy Eyes with a half-smile (she will have to deal with what happened to Vee), and Red, who is said to be redefining her motherhood in this new season.

Apart from the theme, let's go over what we know about the new season of the show. There will be 14 episodes, with the first episode entitled, "It's the Great Blumpkin, Charlie Brown." We know that certain characters will not be back: Jason Biggs' character Larry will not return in the new season. Neither will Paul Schrieber's Portstache.

We know there will be new characters introduced. Pornstache's mom, to be played by Mary Steenburgen, will make an appearance in this new season. Marsha Stephanie Blake has been cast to play the new corrections officer that will replace Pornstache. There will be a Martha Stewart-inspired character, as shared by Kohan, although it has not been confirmed who will play the part. A new inmate, Stella Carlin (played by Ruby Rose), will provide a potential love triangle angle for Alex and Piper. It has also been confirmed that Blair Brown and Mike Birbiglia will join the cast this season.

For the characters that will remain, and in terms of the storylines, it is said that Piper will have more flashbacks, which will give viewers a more in-depth understanding about her development and relationships. Big Boo will finally have her flashback, which would enable fans to understand how she became who she is. Sophia will get into conflict with another inmate and it looks like it will be with Chef Gloria. Taystee will change in the light of what happened to Vee, her mother figure.

One speculation going around after the trailer aired was whether or not Vee really died at the end of Season 2. Actress Lorraine Toussaint has been seen on the set of the show while filming season 3, according to TMZ. A statement was released quickly by Entertainment Weekly, confirming "that Toussaint is not set to be a part of [Season 3]."

However, there is also a scene on the trailer that shows someone, who looks very much like Vee in the blurry background (her hair is quite unmistakable), while Stella flirts with Piper. If ever, this will not be the first time a show has used a character's death to end a season only to have that character "resurrected" in the next.
