'Outlander' season 3 spoilers: new season to be based on Diana Gabaldon's 'Voyager;' Jamie survives the war

(Facebook/Outlander)Jamie will survive the war in season 2 finale of "Outlander" and will continue to tell his story in season 3, which will be based on Diana Gabaldon's Voyager novel.

While the season 2 finale of "Outlander" won't happen until June 9, fans of the romance/historical fiction drama on Starz are already eagerly awaiting its upcoming season 3. After all, there is no stopping the show for having a shot at another season as it has not only been renewed for a season 3 but a season 4 as well.

The renewal of "Outlander" was recently made, just in time for a milestone of the book where the series is based on.

"On this 25th anniversary of the publication of the first book in the U.S., we are thrilled and honored to be able to continue the story that began with author Diana Gabaldon, and is brought to life by the incredibly talented Ronald D. Moore. There are no better storytellers for 'Outlander' than this team, both in front and behind the camera," said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement published on the network's website.

The upcoming season 3 of "Outlander" will be based on the third book of Gabaldon titled "Voyager," while its fourth season will be based on the succeeding book in her series, "Drums of Autumn."

"Voyager," begins with a reveal that Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) in the "Outlander" series did not actually die in the battlefield at Culloden. While Claire (Caitriona Balfe) is shocked that Jamie is actually alive, she is more pleased about his survival in the war.

In the novel, Jamie tries to move forward with his life as he picks up the pieces at the aftermath of the war, while Claire talks about how life has been for her after she left Jamie 20 years prior.

Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) join forces in finding clues about the past and their quest to look for Jamie.

Will they succeed in finding him? If they do, will Claire welcome him back in her life? Answers to these questions will be unveiled when "Outlander" returns to Starz for its season 3 next year.
