'Overwatch' June update to include Competitive Mode: what to expect

(Blizzard)Competitive Mode arrives to "Overwatch" this June.

It's only been a day since "Overwatch" launched, but game developer Blizzard Entertainment has already previewed the game's first major update arriving sometime in June.

To celebrate the launch of "Overwatch," game director Jeff Kaplan hosted a live Q&A on Facebook yesterday. Kaplan was asked about Competitive Mode and what changes it will have when it launches.

"Competitive Mode is the current focus of the Overwatch team and it's the most important thing for us to add to the game right now," he said.

According to Kaplan, the Competitive Mode that they released during closed beta testing received a lot of critical feedback from the players. Blizzard decided to listen to all the comments they received and tried to incorporate features that the players had asked for. As such, the launch version will be very different from what was released during closed beta.

Blizzard has lengthened the duration of each season for Competitive Mode. As players felt that one month was too short, seasons will now last up to three months. Blizzard also reevaluated some of the game formats like Sudden Death. The developers really liked Sudden Death but made sure that it would happen less frequently. Furthermore, Sudden Death will now resolve differently depending on the specific game mode.

Kaplan confirmed that Competitive Mode will be part of the first major update to "Overwatch." Since he did not want to release a wrong launch date, Kaplan instead gave a possible release window. The game update is expected to arrive by mid- or late-June.

Competitive Mode has already been completed and the development team has already started playing it to see how it pans out. Hopefully, the final product will be something that all players will appreciate.

More information will be released closer to the official launch of Competitive Mode.

Kaplan promised fans that they will continue to communicate with the community through developer updates and social media posts. Proving their commitment to "Overwatch," the development team also reportedly reads all the comments and posts from its fans and players.

"Overwatch" is available to play for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Microsoft Windows PC.
