OnePlus One news: Oxygen OS release date delayed

The wait for OnePlus One users to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update just got a little longer, as OnePlus has announced that it will be unable to keep its recent promise of releasing the CyanogenMod 12S update and the new Oxygen OS for the device before its self-imposed deadline.

Users of the "flagship killer" OnePlus One running Cyanogen OS have been worried about the consequences of the fallout between the Chinese startup smartphone manufacturer and Cyanogen late last year. Following its break-up with Cyanogen, OnePlus has been developing its own custom Android ROM, called Oxygen OS, which is designed to give almost a stock Android like experience, similar to that on the Nexus 6.

The company had recently announced that it would be releasing its new Oxygen OS for the OnePlus One before March 27. Apart from its own version of Android for the OnePlus One, the company had also planned to release a new version of CyanogenMod (CyanogenMod 12s) for the OnePlus One by March 30.

However, OnePlus One's representative, David, has now posted on Reddit that certification issues were holding up the completion of the Android 5.0 based Oxygen OS ROM and as promised earlier, the company was giving away free handsets to a select few because it had missed its own deadline. OnePlus had originally planned to make the ROM available by January which was then pushed to February, making this the fourth official delay in bringing out the ROM.

Meanwhile, OnePlus had earlier released a teaser about the imminent launch of its all-new "game-changing" product that will be "coming in April." The images had suggested that OnePlus was getting ready to launch a gaming device, which could be an Android-based game console, or just a controller for playing Android games on a smartphone or tablet.

In a Reddit AMA thread, OnePlus representatives have now said that it would begin selling a drone from next month and the "game changing" product that the company has been teasing for the last couple of weeks was actually a drone, dubbed DR-1. OnePlus has not provided any technical details about the DR-1 and experts believe that the company may have made the drone announcement only to deflect attention from the delay in releasing its updates for OnePlus One devices.
