Manny Pacquiao vs Canelo Alvarez fight rumors: Fight doused as the latter faces Brit Liam Smith; Pacquiao now rumored to fight Adrien Broner

(Reuters / Mark J. Rebilas)It is now rumored that Manny Pacquiao will be fighting Adrien Broner if he comes out of retirement.

The hard-hitting Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who is now out of the question since his impressive show against Amir Khan after he sent the latter straight to the canvas in the sixth round of their battle dubbed as "Power vs. Speed," will now be facing the British boxer, Liam Smith, three months from now.

Fans have been requesting for a matchup between Manny Pacquiao and Canelo Alvarez to see who's really got fists like a hammer. However, with the mentioned upcoming bout of Alvarez, that's not likely to happen.

Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions stated that one of the reasons that they opted for a Smith and Alvarez fight is that they heard rumors about Pacquiao already decided in fighting a younger Adrien Broner. Golden Boy Promotions, however, added that the news that they heard doesn't mean anything conclusive. They also said that the rumor about a Pacquiao-Broner slugfest is just a move to save the other promotion from embarrassment with a bout they said would be less profitable.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao will be one of the busiest men in Philippine politics in the days to come as he will embark on being one of the nation's senators. However, after his announced retirement last April, he is not completely shutting down the idea of stepping inside the ring once again.

Broner, on the other hand, is being managed by the two-time winner of the Boxing Writers of America's Manager of the Year award, Al Haymon, who has conflicts with Top Rank promotion's Bob Arum for quite some time now.

Arum also mentioned that he'll be working with Haymon and put their differences aside for a Pacquiao-Broner bout to materialize.

The promoter added that he doesn't know if Pacquiao is going to come out of retirement. However, he said that the eight-division champion would love to fight for another day.
