PCUSA Membership Declines 3.1 Pct in 2011

Presbyterian Church (USA) membership declined by 3.1 percent to 1.95 million in 2011 compared with the previous year, the denomination announced.

Membership stands at 1,952,287, a decline of 63,804 members since 2010 when membership stood at 2,016,091, the Office of the General Assembly said in statistics released Thursday.

The number of churches at the end of 2011 was 10,466, or 96 fewer than the previous year. The denomination lost 97 churches from 2009 to 2010 and lost 94 from 2008 to 2009.
Statistics were released by the Office of the General Assembly.

Eighteen new churches were organized in 2011 while seventy-five were dissolved, compared to 77 in 2010. Twenty-one congregations were dismissed to other denominations, compared to 16 a year earlier.
