Philadelphia 76ers free agency, trade rumors 2016: Contract situation hazy for Nerlens Noel

Nerlens Noel's stint with the Philadelphia 76ers may not end via trade, but through next year's free agency. As team president of basketball operations, Bryan Colangelo recently shared that there are minimal talks regarding an extension deal for the young big man.

"It's not really something that we've discussed given some of the concerns that I think Nerlens has had right now," Colangelo said, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer's report

Colangelo added, "There's been very little, if any, discussion with his agents about any extension scenarios. But, I'll just leave it at that."

The 2016-17 National Basketball Association (NBA) season is the last year in Noel's rookie contract. If there is no extension signed, the 22-year-old is going to be a restricted free agent in 2017.

For people following Noel and the 76ers, this is not an ideal situation.

It is believed that Noel was shopped by the 76ers in the off-season due to their loaded group of front line players. However, the attempt was unsuccessful despite a number of teams rumored to have an interest in the developing center.

Last month, Noel voiced out his thoughts about Philadelphia having three starting centers. The former Kentucky Wildcat called it "silly" and it seems he was hoping for a solution, although nothing happened.

Colangelo's recent revelation might spark the downfall of Noel and the 76ers' relationship.

As of now it is unknown what the 76ers are planning for Noel, and with Colangelo's statements, it looks like they are lax and showing no aggressiveness in trying to keep one of their budding talents.

A parting of ways is inevitable and both sides would still have the opportunity to thrive if it occurs. Noel will surely receive good offers when he leaves the City of Brotherly Love.

Meanwhile, the 76ers are still stacked at the no. 5 position with Jahlil Okafor and Joel Embiid.
