Johnny Depp's portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow cemented his place in Hollywood's history. The drunk, abrasive but lovable pirate is also the main reason why the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise has such a huge following.

But there have been reports that everybody's favorite rum-swilling, treasure hunting pirate would soon be retiring.

Production for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales" has just wrapped up in Australia, and the cast and crew are reported to be demoralized by the way the 52-year-old Depp have been acting on set.

It is no secret that production for the pirate adventure movie has been stopped several times but according to insiders, Depp's attitude, and his volatile relationship with his wife, has also resulted in a gloomy set and demoralized crew.

One source said the "Sleepy Hollow" star was barely seen on set and that when he did shoot his scenes, it was only to fulfill "his contract at the minimum level." The actor, who is known for really embracing his characters, appeared disinterested and obviously "didn't want to be there."

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" will reportedly be Depp's last pirate film, but as the franchise is still fairly popular (and lucrative), Disney is faced with a dilemma – kill off the character or look for another pirate worthy of commanding the Black Pearl.

There have been rumblings that Disney might go with the second option and are already considering several actors to take over the franchise. Funnyman, Jim Carrey, is reportedly a favorite and one who was considered for the role before Depp came on board. Robert Downey Jr. and "Downton Abbey's" Dan Stevens' names have also been shortlisted, but the former is already known as "Iron Man" while the latter's prim and proper demeanor might not be enough to win over fans.

Depp leaving the Disney franchise has not been confirmed at this point, but the studio is already making sure that "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales" would exceed expectations.

"Pirates of the Caribbean 5" revolves around Sparrow's quest to get his hands on a unique treasure that would give him the power to control the seas so he can fight Captain Salazar, a fellow pirate who escaped the Devil's Triangle and is on his own quest to kill all pirates. Depp will be joined by Kaya Scodelario and Javier Bardem as Carina and Captain Salazar respectively. Orlando Bloom is also back as Will Turner, the captain of The Flying Dutchman.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales" is slated to hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
