'Pirates 5' update: Can Depp, Bloom and Javier Bardem restore franchise to former glory? filming officially underway

(Disney/official Facebook page)"Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Man Tell No Tales" has started filming and will release in July 2017.

Veteran actor Johnny Depp will return to one of his most memorable roles in Captain Jack Sparrow in the fifth installment of Disney's Pirates movie franchise, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales'.

Depp will be especially motivated by a return to form following a string of disappointing projects including passion project 'Mortdecai', 'Transendence', 'The Lone Ranger', and 'Dark Shadows'. All those movies, in addition to underperforming at the box office, received mostly mediocre reviews. While nothing is guaranteed, Depp's character in the Pirates franchise is among the most memorable in recent times and should give the actor a good chance of restoring his former glory.

Meanwhile, production on the film is officially underway in Australia, as per this report on Variety. A short synopsis of the film is as follows:

"Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil's Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea, including him. Captain Jack's only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas."

The addition of the talented Javier Bardem to the cast should provide a boost to the franchise. Bardem previously had an impressive turn as the main villain in the most recent Bond movie 'Skyfall'. His character should serve as an excellent foil for the happy-go-lucky pirate Jack Sparrow.

Also looking for some redemption is Orlando Bloom, who returns to the series following his brief departure from 'Pirates 4'. His character Will Turner is rumored to once again play a pivotal role in the film, this time with his son, played by Brenton Thwaites.

'Pirates 5' is still a long way from completion, but is expected to be released sometime in July 2017.
