In line with the recent trend of rebooting films and television series, it comes as no surprise that the American youth-oriented superhero franchise, "Power Rangers," is getting a grittier big screen adaptation. While the film's debut is still a year and half away, some details about the theatrical release have already surfaced. Especially since the director of the movie himself has teased fans about what they can expect from 2017's "Power Rangers."

"Power Rangers," which first debuted in the States more than 20 years ago in 1993, is a live-action children's program loosely based on the "Super Senpei" characters from Japan. While the series' 22-year production has seen different iterations of the plot, at its core, is the story about a group of teenagers who acquire powers which they use to transform into crime-fighting masked superheroes.

The "Power Rangers" franchise is, undeniably, a worldwide success. The series has spawned two feature films and is still currently on air with its most recent adaptation — "Power Rangers Dino Charge," which came out just this year.

Early in 2014, it was announced that a reboot film has been ordered. Just this year, Dean Israelite, director of 2015's "Project Almanac," has signed on to direct "Power Rangers" and has since spilled details regarding his upcoming project.

In an interview with IGN the director gushed about the reboot's plot, and revealed how surprised he was with how mature and modern the script has turned out to be. He said:

"I read the script and was really surprised by it and thought there was a really cool, contemporary, mature but still playful, buoyant and fun take on the material, and was updated in a really interesting way. It had this wonderful character that's essential to going on a fantastic adventure. I was instantly drawn to it."

"Power Rangers" is expected to be released on Jan. 13, 2017.
