While the PS4 VR headset release date is not yet exactly known, lead developer Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that they have finished 85% of the work needed.

"With the Morpheus and PlayStation 4, we can offer them a totally new virtual reality experience in a lighthearted and fun manner," Yoshida said, citing examples such as virtual travel and education.

Sony Computer Entertainment displayed the PS4 VR headset during the Tokyo Game Show 2014.

"To judge from the game show, where Sony allowed users to try the device for the first time in Japan, Morpheus was successful in giving that immersive feeling. Some people trying a sea-exploration game were making swimming-like moves on the ground," Wall Street Journal reported.

Yoshida declined to provide details on the exact launch and the PS4 VR headset price, but mentioned that they have utilized components found in most smartphones.

It may be recalled that the technology giant first announced PlayStation's prototype VR system for PS4 in March and re-appeared during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) tradeshow in June.

The ultimate objective of Project Morpheus is to bring a different kind of experience to users – to give them the actual feel of listening to a concert, diving into the deep ocean, feeding the dinosaurs during the prehistoric era and combatting zombies.

While the PS4 VR headset gleams with a lot of potential, it is bound to face tough competition from Oculus Rift.

Bought by Facebook for a whopping $2 billion, Oculus Rift has just recently partnered with Samsung to introduce Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition.

Samsung's VR headset will be paired with Galaxy Note 4, which is scheduled for Oct. 17 market release, and promoted as an iPhone 6 killer.
