Rare supermoon–blood moon combo to appear on Sept. 27; blood moon prophecy predicts end of days

The Earth will be witness to two amazing astrological events later this month, a supermoon and blood moon combo that hasn't happened in thirty years and won't happen again for 20 years or more. This phenomenon will be visible on the night of Sept. 27 in North and South America and the early morning hours of Sept. 28 in Europe, Africa and certain parts of Central Asia.

Those in Europe and Africa will see the supermoon at around 2 a.m., so called because it will be closer to the earth than it usually is, thereby making it look larger and whiter. It will then transform into a blood moon at around 3 a.m., changing from silvery white to coppery red.

While this might be a not-to-be missed event for most people, it's the end of times for some. Or at least, that's what they believe will happen.

To be clear, a blood moon is a term that's also used to describe a total lunar eclipse, when the shadow the Earth casts on the full moon causes it to have a reddish glow.

But some Christian fundamentalists, self-proclaimed prophets, Jewish mystics and run-of-the-mill doomsayers say the coming blood moon predicts the "end of days."

This belief, which some call the Blood Moon Prophecy, reportedly stems from the Book of Joel found in the Hebrew Bible which states "the sun will turn into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes." The idea was further built on by Christian ministers John Hagee and Mark Blitz who theorized that the recent tetrad (four consecutive lunar eclipses) that began in April 2014, indicates that a tragedy of epic proportions will hit Earth and maybe even wipe it out.

This idea is similar to what self-proclaimed prophet Rev. Efrain Rodriguez has been saying. Rodriguez claims an asteroid 2.5 miles wide will hit Puerto Rico and will wipe out the Earth. He claims that he got the information from God and he believes in it so deeply that he has even wrote to NASA to warn them about it.

The blood moon is just a few days away, so when should people start preparing for the apocalypse? Interestingly, neither Rodriguez nor Hagee or Blitz can say when will this extinction event happen. However, some say it could happen anytime from September 21 to 28.

NASA has a more definite answer though. The pioneering space agency has released a statement assuring people that there's absolutely no evidence that an asteroid is on a trajectory to hit Earth. They further emphasized that "there is no scientific basis, not one shred of evidence, that an asteroid or any other celestial object will impact Earth on those dates."

If that's the case, then those who can stay up late or wake up early should try to check out the supermoon–blood moon combo on Sept. 27 to Sept. 28.
