'Resident Evil 7' release date still unknown, Capcom producer says 'stay tuned'

Ever since the hardworking people on the Internet pointed out an "Umbrella Corps" trademark filed by game company Capcom in July, buzz around a possible "Resident Evil 7" game has not died down. Whereas previous whispers have been merely wishful thinking and speculation, recent news about the direct follow-up to "Resident Evil 6" came from the producer himself.

Capcom is busy with some spin-off titles and HD remakes of their "Resident Evil" games. This has not stopped fans of the survival horror game from asking for a follow-up to "Resident Evil 6," which came out three years ago. The Japanese game developer and publisher, however, has been mum about it — until earlier this week.

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Dengeki PlayStation, producer Masachika Kawata talked about the whole "Resident Evil" franchise. There was but a brief mention of "Resident Evil 7" but fans will love to know what he had to say.

"We're currently not at a state to talk about it ... but please stay tuned," said Kawata, as translated by Siliconera

It's not the actual confirmation avid fans want but it is a glimmer of hope, albeit a very small one. Asking gamers to "stay tuned" without any plans of following up in it seems a tad cruel and so this must mean that "Resident Evil 7" is in the drawing board somehow. Just when it will pan out, gamers will have to wait and see.

Another reason gamers have been asking for another game in the series is that "RE6" never did too well with gamers and critics alike. It received mixed reviews at best. The point of contention? The gameplay shift, which came across as choppy and messy to some but exciting and new to others. Many gamers are hoping that another sequel would bring the franchise back to its old horror roots.

More updates on "Resident Evil 7" will be posted soon as they become available.
