'Rick and Morty' season 3 release date news: Beth's story to move forward; new characters set to be introduced

(Twitter/@RickandMorty)Beth and Jerry's relationship drama will reportedly be resolved in season 3.

It's highly unlikely that "Rick and Morty" season 3 will be back on air anytime soon, but recent reports tease why it will be worth the wait.

Despite the series ending its sophomore run months ago, fans are still talking about "Rick and Morty." Followers of the popular series were hoping that the scientist and his grandson will be back this year, but it seems that's unlikely to happen.

Still, there are a lot of things that fans should look forward to when the show returns. One recent report teases that Beth and Jerry's marital problems might soon be resolved. Fans will recall that Morty's mom and her partner Jerry have been having relationship problems since season 1. The two have admittedly worked on their marriage, even attending couple's therapy on another planet.

Now it seems the couple's toxic relationship might be resolved, although it's unclear whether this means the two will be able to work things out or will be ending their marriage. The news appears to stem from co-creator Dan Harmon's admission that this running gag is starting to wear thin.

"I thought that Jerry and Beth getting a divorce would be like Kenny being killed in South Park, like, when we first conceived the show... that it would never run out of shelf life, that that was the kind of joke of like, oh all our parents were about to get a divorce," Harmon explained in a commentary on the show's season 2 Blu-ray DVD.

So fans shouldn't be surprised if Beth's story moves forward in season 3, probably minus Jerry. Aside from Beth, another one of Rick's family members will be getting more screen time next season — Summer. It would appear that Rick's granddaughter will be helping Morty spring the scientist out of jail.

There are also rumors that Rick will be captured by Evil Morty for some nefarious purpose. New characters will reportedly be introduced next season as well and one of these characters might be voiced by "Fast and Furious" star Vin Diesel.

It should be stated that these speculations haven't been confirmed (or denied) by Harmon or co-creator Justin Roiland.

"Rick and Morty" season 3 is expected to return to Adult Swim sometime in 2017.
