Samsung Galaxy Note 5: device could be damaged permanently if stylus is inserted the wrong way

The Galaxy Note 5 was announced by Samsung on Aug. 13 and while many expected the device to have a few minor technical and software issues, none were prepared for the redesigned S Pen Stylus to jam the detection mechanism permanently when it is inserted the wrong way.

As soon as news of the flaw emerged via a number of websites, Samsung was quick to point out that the stylus was only designed to be inserted with its nib pointing towards the device.

News of the design flaw emerged on the Internet and soon, several websites were trying to intentionally insert the S Pen Stylus the wrong way to see what would happen. Android Police was one such website and it reported that it was extremely easy to insert the S Pen with its clickable base pointing toward the device. However, once it was inserted, it snags in the slot and considerable force has to be employed to retract it.

The flaw arises soon after as the software on the Note 5 will refuse to recognize the stylus, along with a number of functions like the S Note App. This app, when the device is asleep, will no longer function.

While many reviewers have come to the conclusion that the Galaxy Note 5 is the best phablet in the market, most of its functionality is tied to the S Pen Stylus. On previous models, the S Pen Stylus could not be inserted backwards but on the Note 5, the redesigned stylus can slide in easily both ways, which points toward Samsung not thinking its design through.

Samsung, meanwhile, has responded to the flaw by referring to the manual for the device that is available online and clearly stated that the stylus is not designed to be inserted the wrong way, as any attempt to do so will damage the device.
