Samsung Galaxy Note 8 news, rumors: Infographic leak reveals Note 8 code name; associates device with Lake Baikal

The tech industry is expecting Samsung to rally back, following the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco. The next installment is still shrouded in secrecy, and recent rumors suggest that the Note 8 has been code-named Baikal.

An infographic has been making rounds on Twitter, which revealed the Galaxy Note 8's code name. The photo is of a frozen body of water that has the figure 8 written on the icy surface by the S Pen stylus. Aside from the image, the promo material also has "#TheNextGalaxy" and "Codename Baikal" on it.

Based on the code name and the lake on the photo, it seems like Samsung sought inspiration from the mountainous region of Siberia, Russia where a massive lake called Baikal is located. Little is known about the connection between the lake itself, which is regarded as the deepest lake in the world, and the upcoming installment of the Note series.

According to reports, the next installment in the series will have a 4K display, which will be able to support virtual reality (VR) content. A new artificial intelligence (AI) assistant will also be introduced along with the device. The AI will be go by the name Bixby.

Despite the rumors about Samsung discontinuing the Note series, the tech giant will push through with a new unit this year, although it might launch later than the usual. Samsung mobile unit head D.J. Koh made the announcement last month, confirming the development of the Note 8. To add, Koh also shared that in light of the Note 7 fiasco, the company has decided to implement a whole new set of safety measures to ensure that the problem will not happen again.

Samsung has yet to comment on the latest speculations about the next Galaxy Note unit.

More updates are expected to roll out in the weeks to come.
